青少年高血压发病率在不断上升。美国国家健康和营养调查（NHANES）1963-2002数据显示，高血压前期患病率增长了2.3%；1988-1999数据显示，高血压患病率增长了1%，非西班牙裔黑人和墨西哥裔美国人患病率更高。美国儿童血压整体水平上升了1.4/3.3 mmHg（SBP/DBP）

尽管ABPM在儿科的应用尚有一些不确定性，但在大多数儿童和青少年中获益要大于不确定性，特别是在早期诊断。已经证明ABPM在下述情况时特别有用。
