CELL:还敢熬夜吗?缺觉使得肠道积累活性氧而致死

睡眠对生存至关重要,睡眠行为无处不在,在最早的动物中明显存在类似睡眠的状态,而且严重的睡眠缺失可能是致命的。但是至今为止,这种致命性的原因尚不清楚。

最近,研究人员使用苍蝇和小鼠模型发现,睡眠剥夺能够导致活性氧物种(ROS)的积累和随之而来的氧化应激,特别是在肠道。

ROS不仅是睡眠剥夺的相关因素,而且是死亡的驱动因素:ROS的中和可以防止氧化应激,并使苍蝇在很少或没有睡眠的情况下有一个正常的寿命。

因此,我们可以通过口服抗氧化剂化合物或肠道靶向转基因表达的抗氧化酶来抵抗睡眠不足的危害。

因此,研究人员得出的结论是,严重睡眠限制后的死亡可能是由氧化应激引起的,肠道是这个过程中的中心,当防止ROS积累时,没有睡眠的生存是可能的。

众所周知,睡眠不足对健康会产生一系列负面影响,但睡太多也同样可怕。9月2日,发表在《美国心脏病学会杂志》上的一项新研究中,来自美国麻省理工学院、麻省总医院、哈佛大学、英国曼彻斯特大学、美国科罗拉多大学博尔德分校的联合研究团队,对近50万人进行的研究显示,即使你不吸烟,且没有心血管疾病的遗传易感性,睡眠不足或睡太多都会增加你患心脏病的风险。
