地球物种在进化的过程中逐渐演化出一套计时系统,也就是所谓生物钟。有了生物钟这种机制,生物就可以把特定的生理活动安排在一天的特定时间。例如,人们在晚上入睡,而在清晨醒来;心跳白天比较快而到晚上就会渐渐慢下来。

“这一发现是个意外的惊喜。” 美国达拉斯市得克萨斯大学西南医学中心免疫学家 Lora Hooper 说。她和同事正在研究 NFIL3。NFIL3 是一种控制某些免疫细胞生长的蛋白质。这种基因的蛋白质在某些患有炎症性肠病的人身上发生了突变。


肠道中有一类极其重要的免疫细胞叫作 TH17 细胞,它们善于分泌细胞因子来抵抗细菌和真菌的入侵,但是如果活性太高就会引发肠炎。研究人员通过改变光照让小鼠产生时差反应,该团队发现,缺乏 NFIL3 基因的小鼠肠内有更多 TH17 细胞,其后果就是这些小鼠更容易发生肠炎。

该发现揭示,规律的作息和健康的生活模式对保持免疫系统平衡至关重要,同时让人们更好地了解为什么在现代生活中,免疫炎症包括肠炎发生的频率如此之高。该研究有助于人们更有效地利用自身免疫功能对抗感染或者预防免疫疾病。

Hooper 指出,炎症是许多慢性疾病的基础,诸如心脏病、哮喘、慢性疼痛、黏液囊炎和皮炎。长期炎症性疾病在发达国家更为普遍。
